Media Freedom Rapid Response

The International Press Institute (IPI) is a partner of the Media Freedom Rapid Response (MFRR), a project which tracks, monitors and responds to violations of press and media freedom, providing legal and practical support, public advocacy and information to protect journalists and media workers in the EU and Candidate States.

Mapping Media Freedom

The MFRR deploys a systematic and comprehensive monitoring of press and media violations and documents them on the platform.

The threats captured on the Mapping Media Freedom platform guide the MFRR’s legal, protection and advocacy work and shape the analysis of the major trends in Europe’s media landscape.

As part of this work, the MFRR coordinates fact-finding, advocacy and fast-response missions to source first-hand documentation and information to support our work; engages with national governments, European institutions and other bodies; hosts public and expert events; and coordinates public campaigns to secure greater awareness and public engagement to stand in solidarity with journalists and media workers across the continent.

What is MFRR?

The is organised by an alliance led by the European Centre for Press and Media Freedom (ECPMF), including ARTICLE 19 Europe, the European Federation of Journalists(),Free Press Unlimited(ʱ),International Press Institute (IPI) and CCI/Osservatorio Balcani Caucaso Transeuropa (OBC Transeuropa). The project commenced in 2020 and is co-funded by the European Commission.

The MFRR brings together rights organisations, policy makers, journalists, trade unions, membership bodies and public watchdogs to advocate for greater press and media freedom protections across EU Member States and Candidate Countries.
